What visual search actually does
Lens compares your photograph against an index of images from the web and surfaces the ones that are visually closest, along with the pages they came from. It is an extraordinary piece of engineering and it is not a classifier: there is no taxonomy behind it and no confidence in a species, only similarity in an image space.
That works when appearance and identity line up. A monarch butterfly, the Eiffel Tower, a specific model of trainer, a book cover — similar-looking things really are the same thing, and Lens will get you there faster than anything else.
It fails precisely where identification is hard, because the difficult cases are difficult because different species look alike. Wild carrot and poison hemlock produce nearly identical white umbels. Sassafras and mulberry produce the same three leaf shapes. Hoverflies evolved to look like wasps. A tool that ranks by visual similarity will confidently surface the wrong one, and it will do so with the same interface it uses when it is right.
The practical rule: use Lens to generate a hypothesis, and something else to test it. Lens is excellent at getting you to a candidate name in five seconds; it is the wrong tool for confirming that name.
Where Lens beats every dedicated app
A fair comparison has to say this clearly, because it is a large set of real problems.
