Seek or Google Lens: identification against visual search

Both cost nothing, so this is not a spending decision. It is a decision about what kind of tool you are holding: Lens ranks images by visual similarity and leaves the conclusion to you, while Seek classifies against a taxonomy and returns a name. On distinctive subjects those converge. On the pairs that actually matter they do not, because look-alike species look alike — which is the entire problem.

What visual search is actually doing

Lens compares your photograph against an index of web images and surfaces the visually closest, with the pages they came from. It is remarkable engineering and it is not a classifier: there is no taxonomy behind it and no confidence in a species, only similarity in an image space.

That works when appearance and identity line up — a monarch butterfly, a specific trainer, a book cover. It fails where identification is hard, because the difficult cases are difficult precisely because different species look alike. Wild carrot and poison hemlock make nearly identical white umbels. Hoverflies evolved to look like wasps and are convincing to predators, so they are convincing to an image index.

The rule that follows: use Lens to generate a hypothesis and something else to test it.

Seek runs on the phone

Seek identifies on the device, which almost nothing else does, and the consequences are larger than they sound.

Nothing is uploaded. No server-side record of what you photographed or where. Lens requires a connection because the index is remote.

It works with no signal. A canyon, abroad without data, a plane. Lens does not work at all.

It is a live camera. You point rather than shoot, and the identification updates continuously — which is why getting closer often resolves it several taxonomic levels deeper within seconds.

The cost is a smaller model than a datacentre one, which contributes to Seek stopping at genus where a cloud service might offer a species.

Where Lens wins outright

A fair comparison has to be specific about this, because it is a large set of real problems.

  • Anything with text. A faded nursery label, a seed packet, a care tag, a museum caption. No identifier reads text; Lens reads and translates it.
  • Manufactured objects. Tools, china marks, pottery stamps, furniture, machine parts — none of which has a taxonomy.
  • Coins and stamps, unexpectedly well, because they are man-made with text and repeated designs. Lens also surfaces real listings, which gives a market price rather than an estimate.
  • Landmarks and places.
  • Buying something. It finds the product and where to get it, which no identifier attempts.

Seek covers none of these and is not trying to. It is a naturalist tool built on a taxonomy of life.

Free, but free for different reasons

Seek listed no in-app purchases at all on 2026-09-03, no account and no advertising, published by a non-profit joint initiative. Lens is free inside the Google app, which listed 8 in-app purchase tiers for other Google services — Lens itself is not paywalled.

The difference is what is being exchanged. Lens is free because visual search feeds an advertising business; Seek is free because a non-profit publishes it and identification is the mission. If that matters to you it has a concrete form: Seek uploads nothing, and Lens cannot function without sending your photograph to a server.

Neither one covers rocks properly

Seek will not touch a rock, because it is built on a taxonomy of living things and stone was never alive. Lens will show you similar-looking stones, which is genuinely of some use and is not identification.

Minerals are decided by streak, hardness, cleavage and heft — properties a camera cannot measure. Rub the specimen on the unglazed back of a bathroom tile and the powder colour is nearly constant within a species; hematite is silver, red or black and always streaks rusty red-brown. Where these figures come from

Prices, tiers, ratings, versions and update dates are read from each app's US App Store listing on 2026-09-03 through Apple's Lookup API and product pages. Google Lens has no separate listing — it lives inside the Google app, and the figures shown for it are that app's.

Handing the phone to a child

A comparison people rarely make explicitly, and it is where these two diverge most sharply.

Seek was designed for this audience. No account, no advertising, no in-app purchases, no chat, no uploads, and a badge system that rewards finding new taxa. Its refusal to guess below a confidence threshold is a child-safety feature as much as an epistemic one: a child who learns a wrong species name learns it permanently, and 'a beetle of some kind' is a better outcome than a confident error.

Google Lens is a general-purpose search product inside an app containing everything else Google does. It will return a search results page for anything pointed at it, which is a different proposition to hand to a seven-year-old.

The other thing worth knowing: Seek works with no signal and uploads nothing, so it functions in a wood, on a school trip, and on a phone with no data plan. Lens needs a connection every time.

Is Google Lens good for identifying plants and animals?

For distinctive, common species, yes and instantly. For anything subtle, no — Lens is visual search rather than species identification, so it returns photographs that look like yours and leaves the conclusion to you. That fails exactly where identification is hard, because look-alike species look alike.

Which one works offline?

Seek. It identifies entirely on the device, so it works in a canyon, abroad without data or on a plane, and nothing leaves your phone. Google Lens searches a remote index and does not function without a connection.

Is Seek free?

Yes. Its US App Store listing carried no in-app purchases at all on 2026-09-03, there is no account and no advertising. It is published by iNaturalist, a non-profit joint initiative.

When should I use Lens instead?

Anything man-made or anything with text: nursery labels, seed packets, tools, china marks, pottery stamps, furniture, landmarks, products, coins and stamps. Naturalist apps are built on taxonomies of living things and will not touch any of it.

Can Google Lens identify mushrooms?

It will show you similar photographs, which is dangerous rather than merely unhelpful. Many toxic and edible fungi look alike in images — that is why people are poisoned — so similar pictures prove nothing. The characters that settle it are the volva buried at the base, the spore print and the substrate, none of which is in a photograph.

Why do Seek and Lens disagree?

Because they are answering different questions: Lens ranks by visual similarity and Seek classifies against a taxonomy, so they diverge exactly where appearance and identity come apart. Treat the disagreement as information — it usually means you are looking at a genuine look-alike pair, which is when to check a diagnostic character rather than trust either.

Where these figures come from

  • Prices, in-app purchase tiers, ratings, versions, download sizes and update dates are read from each app’s US App Store listing on 2026-09-03 using Apple’s own Lookup API and product pages. Nothing on this page is a figure somebody typed from memory, and the build fails if one appears.
  • Apple does not publish billing periods next to in-app purchase names, so where two tiers share a name they are usually the same subscription billed over different terms. Check the current price in the App Store before you buy anything.
